Agricultural Conservation Practices and Aquatic Ecological Responses

چکیده

Conservation agriculture practices (CAs) have been internationally promoted and used for decades to enhance soil health mitigate loss. An additional benefit of CAs has mitigation agricultural runoff impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Countries across the globe agencies that provide programs farmers implement a variety CAs. Increasingly there is need demonstrate can ecological improvements in Growing global concerns lost habitat, biodiversity, ecosystem services, increased eutrophication associated harmful algal blooms are expected intensify with increasing populations changing climate. We conducted literature review identifying 88 studies linking responses since 2000. Most were North America (78%), primarily United States (73%), within framework USDA Effects Assessment Project. Identified most frequently documented macroinvertebrate (31%), fish (28%), (20%) riparian (29%), wetland (18%), or combinations (32%) and/or (27%) pesticide contamination (23%). Notable research gaps include better understanding biogeochemistry CAs, quantitative links between varying responses, linkages structure function.

Representation of agricultural conservation practices with SWAT

Results of modelling studies for the evaluation of water quality impacts of agricultural conservation practices depend heavily on the numerical procedure used to represent the practices. Herein, a method for the representation of several agricultural conservation practices with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is developed and evaluated. The representation procedure entails identifying...

Evolution and Phylogenetic Diversity of Yam Species (Dioscorea spp.): Implication for Conservation and Agricultural Practices

Yams (Dioscorea spp.) consist of approximately 600 species. Presently, these species are threatened by genetic erosion due to many factors such as pest attacks and farming practices. In parallel, complex taxonomic boundaries in this genus makes it more challenging to properly address the genetic diversity of yam and manage its germplasm. As a first step toward evaluating and preserving the gene...

Use of Multispectral Ikonos Imagery for Discriminating between Conventional and Conservation Agricultural Tillage Practices

There is a global concern about the increase in atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases. One method being discussed to encourage greenhouse gas mitigation efforts is based on a trading system whereby carbon emitters can buy effective mitigation efforts from farmers implementing conservation tillage practices. These practices sequester carbon from the atmosphere, and such a trading system...

Agricultural conservation practices and wetland ecosystem services in the wetland-rich Piedmont-Coastal Plain region

In the eastern U.S. Coastal Plain and Piedmont region, diverse inland wetlands (riverine, depressional, wet flats) have been impacted by or converted to agriculture. Farm Bill conservation practices that restore or enhance wetlands can return their ecological functions and services to the agricultural landscape. We review the extent of regional knowledge regarding the effectiveness of these con...

Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems

1. The spatial distribution of the most important subtidal habitats (coral reefs, coral carpets, seagrass meadows, sand with corals, macroids, mud, hardgrounds) and mangroves was mapped in northern Safaga Bay, Red Sea, Egypt. Coral communities were analysed separately for their ecological and spatial patterns. This, coupled with information about major current patterns in the bay, provides a fr...
